A one-day training workshop designed to help people understand self-harm and to know how to intervene or respond to those who engage in it will be held in Galway on September 20 next.
The Understanding Self Harm training will run from 9.30am to 4.30pm at Croí, Moyala Lane, Newcastle, Galway, (H91FF68) on that date and is suitable for nurses, social workers, Gardai counsellors, community volunteers, teachers, youth workers, residential workers, child care staff, etc.
Participants will be informed of definitions of self-harm and consider its relationship with suicide; understand the prevalence of self-harm across different age groups and genders; be familiar with the functions, motivations and meanings underlying self-harm; demonstrate improved sensitivity and awareness of the needs of people who self-harm and be aware of possible interventions and helpful responses in responding to people who self-harm.
As the Understanding Self Harm training can be challenging and sensitive in nature it is not recommended to attend for anyone who may have been bereaved or affected by a suicide within the last 12 months.
The training is free but places are limited and booking is essential.
