A Samaritans office is to open in Castlebar in early 2023.
Now anyone based in Castlebar – or in the surrounding areas – can volunteer with Samaritans to support people both in Mayo and nationwide.
The commitment of Samaritans’ volunteers means people going through difficult times can count on Samaritans to be there day and night, 365 days a year.
They are now looking for new listening volunteers to help expand the service.
Anyone has it in them to be a Samaritan. You won’t need to have previous experience or qualifications, but you will need to be non-judgmental and accepting of others. It doesn’t necessarily matter whether you’ve gone through difficult times yourself, what matters is that you want to help people – all kinds of people, from all walks of life.
You will be supported every step of the way in your volunteer journey! Samaritans are here for callers and for each other too. You’ll be welcomed into a warm and incredibly supportive environment. If you are interested in volunteering with the Samaritans in Mayo;
· You can attend our open meeting to find out more about volunteering with the Samaritans and the commitment involved. You can also raise any queries you have at the meeting.
· If you are still interested and can make a commitment, you’ll have an interview so we can get to know each other and find a role that suits you.
· Listening volunteers will complete full Samaritans training so you know what to say and do when people reach out for help.
· Everyone gets ongoing support from a network of fellow volunteers.
