This year, as part of their annual Better Out Than In campaign, BeLonG To LGBTQ+ Youth Ireland is letting LGBTQ+ young people know that there are people they can talk to about their worries and fears without judgement – no matter how big or small.
The initiative is inspired by conversations BeLonG To had with young LGBTQ+ Irish people about what stops them from opening up and talking about mental health challenges they face.
Some of the answers included:
“I’ve come out as LGBTQ+ so I should be happy.”
“I don’t want to waste anyone’s time. There are other people with much bigger problems than me.”
“Lots of my friends experience anxiety. It’s normal to feel like this.”
“I’m afraid of seeing a therapist. I have no idea what to expect.”
As part of the annual Better Out Than In campaign, BeLonG To are letting LGBTQ+ young people know that there are people they can talk to about their worries and fears without judgement – no matter how big or small.
It allows users to check out face-to-face, online, phone, and text supports so that they can share what’s going on.
Working in collaborations with therapists, they have created short videos sharing information about mental health, accessing support, and coping mechanisms.
Moninne Griffith, CEO BeLonG To, remarked:
“We know that anxiety and depression can form part of the LGBTQ+ youth experience, and we want to send a message to LGBTQ+ young people that this doesn’t mean they just have to accept it and struggle alone.
“Asking for help is not something to be feared. It is life-saving.
“We are driving home a vital message with this campaign – that life opens up when you do.”
