Drug and Alcohol Awareness Week events
The 10th Regional Drug and Alcohol Awareness Week commences today, Monday, November 8.
Run by the Western Region Drug and Alcohol Task Force (WRDATF) this week (November 8 – 12) promotes awareness of drug and alcohol related issues in the western region.
A comprehensive programme of online and in person events will be staged throughout the week.
Among them is a free webinar on Wednesday, November 10 next from noon to 1pm called “Safety Sign Posts – Recovery is for Family Too”.
Students from the 8 week certificate in Trauma, Mental Health & Addiction (organised and supported by Mayo Drug and Alcohol Family Support Development Group (Tacú FRC & WRDATF) present their group project on this webinar focusing on current needs of families in the area of trauma, mental health and addiction.
The webinar will have 3 interesting and insightful speakers on very current needs and issues for families in the region.
They include Dr. Declan Coogan – Child to Parent Violence & Non-Violence Resistance Expert who will discuss “Supporting Safety through Solidarity”; Caroline McConville – SMART Recovery Family and Friends National Co-ordinator whi will talk about the SMART Recovery Programme for Family and Friends and representative from Mayo Women’s Support Services who will discuss “Recognizing domestic violence and how to respond”.

On Tuesday, November 9, Mags Dillon from Mayo Drugs and Alcohol Family Support in conjunction with The Family Centre will host a workshop on “Engaging young people on the issue of alcohol, drugs & addictive behavior”.
It will run from 11am-1pm and aims to increase understanding of why people use alcohol or drugs, the stages of use, forming habits and how we respond and cope with stresses and pressures.
This workshop is also free of charge and is open to anyone in contact with young people and wants to increase their understanding of this current issue for many young people whether you’re a professional, volunteer, teacher, student, community member or parent.

A compassionate mindfulness session will be held on Thursday, November 11 from 3.30pm to 4pm via Zoom with Joan Flannelly, Heart Space Meditation.
