Tens of thousands take part in ‘Darkness into Light’ walks across the country
Over 150,000 people have taken part in the annual ‘Darkness into Light’ walks and runs across the country.
The symbolic 5km walk promotes suicide prevention and looks to tackle the stigma that leads people to the doors of Pieta House centres.
This year’s 5km Darkness Into Light started at 4.14am.
The first international walk kicked off in Christchurch, New Zealand at 7.15pm GMT on Thursday and the last walk will be in Vancouver, Canada at 1pm GMT on Saturday.
The “unprecedented level of support this year” caused the organisation to run out of yellow t-shirts.
The events took place at 150 locations around the country. The largest gathering was in the Phoenix Park where 12,000 people gathered from early morning.
People were tweeting from event across the country from early morning.
